Eyelid Malpositions

Eyelid malposition (the term eye specialists use for an abnormal positioning of the eyelid) is relatively common, and it can take a number of different forms. However, despite it being a condition that occurs quite frequently, it is one that nevertheless may need to be addressed by an eye specialist, as eyelid malposition can not only affect your appearance, but can also have an impact on the ongoing health of your eyes.

EYELID SYMPTOMS

It is recommended that you get a referral to an ophthalmologist who specialises in eyelid treatment in Adelaide if you have any form of eyelid malposition, including:

  • Drooping Eyelids – where the upper eyelid droops down reducing your field of vision. It can be caused due to either excess skin hanging down on the upper eyelid causing heaviness and droopiness of the upper eyelid (Dermatochalasis) or due to age related stretching of the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid up (Ptosis).
  • Entrpoion – where the eyelid turns inwards to such a degree that your eyelashes come into contact with your cornea, and which can cause irritation or tearing of the conjunctiva. It commonly affects the lower eyelid.
  • Ectropion – where the lower eyelid turns outwards, and causes irritation of the cornea.
  • Upper Eyelid – An upper eyelid that is unusually high, or a lower one that is abnormally low (known as eyelid retraction).
